Teenage Terror’s?
Scott Shelton
Being a parent of a teenage son or daughter isn’t easy with all the moaning and groaning, but are all teenagers really like that? Most teens are sensationalised as violent, drug addicted terror’s who are obsessed with making trouble and getting drunk, however some teens are vibrant, caring people who are just interested in their: studies, friends and families. It doesn’t help with films like Skins and High School Musical 2 and teenagers basing their lives on the unrealistic films and the extreme live of the characters in the films.
In High School Musical the teens are shown as carefree people who like singing and dancing and helping each other out, this is a film from Disney so it is aimed at little children showing how great and fun it is to be a teenager by making the lives of the characters take life extremely positively.
However, in Skins the teens are shown as drunk, drug addicted people who don’t care about anything but drugs, sex and alcohol. The target demographic is for adults (18+). In the film, the teens are sensationalised as drug addled people who don’t care about their education or their lives.
I believe these portrayals are very inaccurate, as in my experience, most teens are complicated people because they try to live their lives as best they can, but they are unable to do that with the media telling everyone that they are brutish thugs who are addicted to drugs and sex or overly enthusiastic and hard working people.
The parents of High School Musical are kind and caring about their teens and they act more like best friends then family, However Cassie’s parents (in Skins) don’t care when Cassie says that she’s about to be signed off from anorexia school, they would rather have sex and paint each other than look after Cassie.
The positive things the teens in High School Musical

Teens these days are just controlled by the media. Anywhere you go there will be some sort of complaint or remark if there is a big group of teenagers whether they have just done something for the community or just come out of prison. People will make assumptions no matter what you doing. It could be playing football or listening to music either way members of the public will think worse of you due to the media. The news will display shocking stories of shoplifting or even murder when a teenagers is involved but when it’s an adult involved they don’t want to know. (If it wasn’t bad enough) the media either portrays us as either ridiculous, schoolwork obsessed geeks like they are in High School Musical or involved with: alcohol, drugs, sex and trashing hom1es like the characters in Skins.

1. get rid of capitals- capitals only for names and at the start of sentences.
2. expand- think about how the different audiences of the two shows are appealed to and how the two shows use extrme stereotypes basically to make money through advertising- not really caring what the results might be for teenagers and parents who may see the stereotypes as true and feelpressurisedto either become impossibly 'goody goody' or drug-taking'Skins'-type teens.

Task-Write an article for a magazine on the portrayal of teenagers in the media. Focus on your analysis on Skins and High School Musical 2.

It’s not easy being a teen, yes we have fun and go out with mates, but we also have to go to school every day and then do homework when we get home, it aint fair. Parents don’t understand the stressfulness of getting up at 7 o clock every morning, it’s too early and none of us like it. We get in trouble sometimes but parents should praise not punish, we can’t help that the role models we have are either happy go lucky, hopelessly unrealistic fantasies of High School Musical 2, or the degrading, alcohol obsessed stereotypes of channel 4s Skins.
High School Musical portrays teens as cheerful people who enjoy work at school and never get associated with drugs, alcohol or sex.
Skins portrays teens as selfish, arrogant people who are associated with alcohol, drugs and sex on a daily basis
I believe the portrayals are inaccurate as in my experience, teens are all different and not one teen is exactly the same and they do not do the same things.
And let’s face it, the reason for this gap between the media and real life is because the makers of Skins (Channel 4) and High School Musical (Disney) want to make money; Skins is for more adult audiences, who like the thrill of teenagers living their life to the full and getting in trouble. High School Musical is for children who like seeing happy people in movies, dancing about and just having fun.
These two shows couldn’t be more different in terms of how the parents and their teens relate to one another. Cassie from `Skins` sees her parents as irrelevant, and she chooses to lie about her anorexia to them, they couldn’t see through the obvious lie that she had put on weight and she was finishing her anorexia class and that she had a massive breakfast and wasn’t hungry.
On the other hand, in High School Musical 2 the parents are treated very differently by their teens. Troy from High School Musical treats his father (basketball coach) like more of a friend than a dad. Troy and his dad never seem to have any arguments and they don’t lie to each other.

How teens are portrayed: men’s just 17
Being a teen isn’t the easiest thing having spots peer pressure it is all too much and school on top really pushes you over the edge. Some people see us as ether goody to shoes or drug obsessed alcoholics which isn’t fear but it isn’t there fault they just get it off skins or hsm

The parents in skins are not really paying attention to their kids as they are all ways getting in to trouble drinking taking drugs and having sex which in the real world would not be happening but we would not be some happy helpful singing and dancing nut cases doing all we can for society and the

It’s not easy being a teenager, we have to juggle school work and our social lives, we have our peers and parents going on at us, when really they should be parsing us . They also don’t understand about the things that we want to do like going and other social activities outside school work. Weekends are for going out with your mates not for doing homework and socialising with the family. Parents don’t understand the pressure of our GCSE’s and them going on at us doesn’t make them any easier. The media also make being a teenager not as easy as people think the media portrays as either drinking and smoking thugs or perfect little children who do nothing wrong. Teenagers are just normal people, yes some teens are bad but not every 40 year old is perfect. Everyone has been a teen at one point in their life, and we can’t help the age we are at.

Isaac buckingham Task: write an article for a magazine on the portrayal of teenagers in the media focus your analysis on skins and high school musical.
For most of us our teenager years are when we mature to a young adult but do kids today? All they seem interested in are live messengers and computer games. They also perhaps go out drink smoke, mess their lives up, although deep down they know they’re doing it to be cool. There a shorter phrases of real words here that teenagers use, lmfao rofl bffl etc. These are all used on online messaging and games. Teen’s hormones cause problems for families and friends and to make matters worse, the media either gives them the impossibly clean cut role models of HSM2 or the sensationalised stereotypes of skins. Hsm portrays teens as happy kid’s cheerful clever people want to do well in school and not get involved with bad things. Such as drugs, sex, and alcohol.

Skins portrays teens as getting involved with drugs drink and not being innocent 1 bit.

Both High School Musical and Skins are incredibly inaccurate. They really don’t represent teens as they really are. The media are not bothered about the problems they cause teens they are only in it for the money. Disney and Channel 4 produce different shows/films for different target demographics. High School Musical targets a younger audience so they can sell merchandise as well as produce the films whereas Skins aim for an older audience later at night because it contains sex, drugs and alcohol.
The relationship between parents and teens is a confusing one. Parents are generally caring, kind and want the children to achieve the best they can. Due to that they have to set boundaries and rules but also try to help as much as the can. So the two shows High School Musical and Skins are the complete extremes at both ends. In High School Musical the teens far the teens farther is more like a friend than a parent. He gives his kid money and allows him to open up and can tell them what’s on their minds whereas in Skins the parents couldn’t care about their children and don’t see they have a responsibility to look out for their daughter Cassie is anorexic and shoves weights down her skirt to make it look like she has gained wait.

Head line: What Do You Want Out Of life?
It’s not easy being a teen, there’s school work and friends to fit in with. But think! What do you do when there’s no school and your friends are out clubbing? Do you smash up the house and take drugs while your parents are out? Do you do coursework, and spring clean the house? Do your parents moan and groan about your attitude and the way you dress? Do they praise you for your good grades and wonderful work?
It’s not all about school work and taking drugs. It’s what you are that matters! Don’t take advantage of the role models in Disney’s wonderful high school musical (the well behaved) or in Skins (the drug obsessed teens).

FHM: do or don’ts
Do you remember when you were a teenager? Late night parties, skipping school and generally getting into trouble. Well now you see your kid bro doing the same thing your sort of stuck because you might want to tell him to pack it in as it will end up worse for him in later life and that staring at girls as they go by is not a good idea as they may already have a boyfriend that is 10x bigger that you. However, then you think should I? Because I was just as bad and I would be a hiperkrit and it’s no really your place to tell them after all you did do it yourself. I mean do you let them grow up like over soppy and over generous characters like the ones in HSM2 or watch them grow up like horrid over drugged and sex addicts like the characters in channel 4 Skins. I mean there both a pretty poor image of teen in the real world.
HSM portrays teens as fun, bubbly over generous, butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth, they are always involved in positive activities like home work or music making. On the other hand Skins (channel 4.) shows teens as unlawful and drug addled lives with an only hobby of sex and parties to keep the busy.
There are many different ways that teens are portrayed on T.V. and other forms of media, like in Skins were the characters have bad relationships with parents as it shows with Cassies mum and dad who are more interested in sex than they are about the fact that their own daughter is anorexic . However, in HSM2 they treat their parents more like best mates than parents.
Not all is bad with the characters in channel 4 skins as Cassie babysits her little brother and another is seen praying to a god after a night of partying. In HSM2 the characters are always involved in something good like making music, school plays and sport activities.

The media also make it harder when they show programs like High school musical where all the children are perfect and they never do anything wrong in comparison to skins where the teenagers are drink obsessed, drug abusers. Looking at both the shows in detail first looking at the relationships between the parents and the children. In HSM the relationships are more like friends than parents in some ways, they give their children money so they can improve their education, however in skins the parents don’t really care about their children and are more bothered about sex and alcohol. The teens in both of these programs are also very different, in HSM they are perfect and all the boys do netball and all the girls dance and sing and they all still get on with their school work and get all the grades they need. On the other hand, in skins they don’t do many positive activities as they nearly all take drugs, drink and smoke. However there are some positive things they do such as babysitting and preying. The love and sex lives in these programs are also very different, In HSM you don’t see Troy and Gabriella having sex and kissing each other all the time. In skins however you always see the couples having sexual relationships. Next the dialogue, the first 10 minutes of these programs are very different, in the first 10 minutes of skins you see people taking drugs and swearing. On the other hand in HSM you see happy school children dancing and doing well in school. The setting in both of these is very different as well,

Life’s not easy being when you’re a teen, we’ve got school to worry about and our social live. Then you mostly get parents nagging at you about stuff we don’t care about us teens would want to go out to town on Saturdays and even stay out late. Then you think there’s different role models out there like the happy goody Disney’s high school musical or the messed up smoking losers who don’t care at all like channel 4 skins.
High school musical is aimed at younger kids as the characters in the movie are very bubbly happy fun and worry about there school work and there always jumping around singing. But then you see skins where there all obsessed with drugs sex and alcohol anorexic kids and just people who don’t care about anything or anyone and there trashing up the house’s and skins is mostly aimed at teens 16 and above and is put on at 9pm or after.
There is a big difference between hsm and skins, in high school musical the coach (troys farther) acts more like a friend then a dad, he talks to the teens very nicely and then in skins cassies parents don’t care about anything she does, there always having sex, painting naked pictures and just basically taking more attention to themselves then cassie and her little brother.

The positive things the teens in High School Musical do/take part in are: They try to get summer jobs to pay for college, they dance and make music, and play sports like basketball .On the other hand, they take part in some negative things like falling out with friends and throwing their papers in the air. The positive things the teens the teens in Skins do/take part in are: Babysitting and praying to Allah. However they also take part in some negative things like: Drug taking, drinking, sex and trashing their parents’ homes.
In High School Musical there aren’t any sexual relationships, but they call each other “hot” and take their relationships seriously in a sweet and romantic way. In Skins the relationships are sexual orientated and the attitude to sex is referred to all the time, there are no sweet or romantic scenes or feelings in Skins.
The colours in the Mise-en-scene in High School Musical are bright, primary colours like: Blues, reds and yellows on a white background; however the colours in Skins are drab and dark and are usually greys or dark blues. The settings in High School Musical are clean and bright apart from the opening scene when shadow surrounds the school as college is about to end, then every scene after that is sunlit and bright. The general setting in Skins is dark and filthy; the first shots are dark with food and litter everywhere
There are 16 scenes in the opening 10 minutes of Skins, the first scene with Cassie waking up in a trashed house is very long, there are 20 scenes in the first 10 minutes of High School Musical and they are very short.
The music in Skins is non diagetic and made up from a slow, classical organ and other quiet and deep sounds, in High School Musical the music is an upbeat soundtrack played from a radio (non diagetic) usually with the characters singing along.

Finished version (:

FHM: all grown up but still to young

For a lot of us when we were teenagers it was a stoppy grump time. Hormones taken place always wonting are own way. Far to obsessed with girls. Think about your niece or nephews with the role models they get are un realistic happy dancing perfect teens from Disney’s high school musical or the hopeless drug addicts from channel 4’s skins.

HSM portrays there teenagers as being fun happy well behaved and always helping each other out.
Skins portrays there teenagers as being drug addicted thief’s that always wont sex and bullying others.
I believe this portrayal of teenagers is incorrect because even in skins they do good activities like praying to there god in the morning but also saying he hopes he isn’t listening because he took all those drugs the night before. In high school musical they portray there kids as being perfect witch I think is incorrect because every child has got in trouble more then once and most children don’t want jobs to pay for there education. They wont jobs to buy cars and fun and lots of other things to do.

In skins cassias walked in as her parents were having sex on the kitchen cassias mum asked her about her anorexia but didn’t seem to care. In hsm troy’s (his basketball coach) acts more like a friend then a parent so there are 2 different types of bonds between HSM and skins. HSM parents are more careing and wont more to do with there children because they wont them to have a good education and have fun.

Are children take part in many activities ; In skins they do bad things but also take part in activities likes sports praying to their gods and helping each other out.
HSM’s teens take part in sports and they look for jobs to pay for there education.
Channel 4’s skins take part in negative activities like underage sex getting drunk and take drugs. As negative as hsm gets is chucking there papers in the air.

Skins love and sex situation is mostly getting drunk having sex ad getting drugged up.
HSM’s is more fantasy lovely and more romantic relation ship.

HSM’s attitude to sex is only holding hands very light things unlike skins witch they are obsessed with sex, they are always going to partys having sex with someone they don’t know and boosting about it.
They have 2 different types of attitudes to sex one is more intument then the other.

The amount of foul language is designed to shock the audience that are watching and to show it is an adult program that’s not for children. In HSM the language in hsm. There is ore foul language in 5 minutes of skins then there is in the whole of HSM.

In skins some of the slang they use like spliffs and parents called olds and pills and in hsm they have some slang like I got to get bank witch means he’s got to earn some money.

Not all yobs
being teenage and a boy means your a geek or a yob?
it isnt easy being a teenager and a boy especailly when school is in the way of all our plan i just wanna be out with all my mates all the timeand you have your parents asking why you go out so much witch is an obvious answer aint it?i dont want to be stuck in school all day and then go home and be stuck in all the time.it doesnt makt it any easyer with the unusually happy shows like HSM or the depressed drug crazed kid of skins on our tvs.
most teens are not drug crazed alchoholics or sing song wiedos it is somewhere in between the two.
not saying all teens take drugs or they dance on the canteen tables.the media does not help are case atall with theese two extreme stereotypes all of us teens pick what we do and most of the tim it is a bit of bothplus other stuff.also the way the newspapers and new on tv goes on about teenage antisocail behavior all the time but if audults do it nobody knows about it.
the media shows teenagers in there own way(there own opinion)its called being in a stereotype their so caught up in making money they dont thik of the problems and opinions they leave on us it makes adolesent alot harder than it already is.
The next reason i wanted to write this article is in HSM there teenagers dont seem intrested in sex at all just all that love crap.
But teenagers arnt intrested in settling down lets be honest.to be completely honest i think skins is totally correct in this area.
